The Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group was set up at in 2000 at Monash University in Australia by Jim Breen, who at that time was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Information Technology. The main reason for establishing the Group was to have a vehicle which could hold the copyright for the various dictionary files Jim had compiled, and which could receive and spend funds in a text-effective way for the improvement of the files and associated software. The group has a WWW page.

While it has been called a "Group", in effect it is just Jim alone, and the team who take part in the development of the files are scattered all over the world.

In 2006, Jim registered the "edrdg.org" domain and rented a server to be a host site for EDRDG activities.
